Arteta Warns Fitness Crisis Could Undermine The Gunners' Trophy Quest

Arsenal's manager has expressed concern that his team's pursuit for titles this season is being threatened by a concerning circle of injuries and a relentless fixture list.

Fresh Squad Update

Star player Declan Rice did not travel for the Champions League clash to face Club Brugge due to sickness. In addition, forward Leandro Trossard and center-back William Saliba are still unavailable.

There was, however, better news regarding Gabriel Jesus, with the South American striker registered to their European squad. He comes in for the injured youngster Max Dowman, who suffered an foot injury.

"Training, no because we lack time to train. But clearly the fact that you are missing players, you are placing demands on other players more, there's a consequence to that and it's a really dangerous cycle."

Dowman's issue is the most recent in a long series of injuries for the North London side. Since the start of last campaign, they have suffered 95 injuries, the second-most total in the English top flight.

Extended Absences

  • Defenders Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhães are not expected to be back until the new year.
  • Midfielder Kai Havertz still rehabilitate from surgery and "needs more time," as stated by the manager.

Arteta dismissed the suggestion that training intensity were to blame, pointing to a shortage of time for sessions. He highlighted the strain on available players, some of whom have featured over 150 matches in two years.

Recruitment Strategy

Even after a significant summer investment exceeding £250 million, Arteta stated the team is not looking to dip into the winter transfer market.

"Right now we're just focusing on getting the players back and hopefully it will be a question of weeks," he said. "It's clear how crucial those weeks are going to be."

Looking Ahead

The squad suffered their initial defeat in 18 games at the hands of Aston Villa, reducing their lead at the summit of the Premier League to two points.

Focus now turns to the Champions League, where a sixth group win would virtually secure a top-eight place. Forward Gabriel Martinelli could create history by scoring in a fifth consecutive European match.

"We are frustrated with the result, but we have to move forward," he said. "It's not like everything is going badly because we lost one game. So we remain united."
