Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
